It’s time for spring cleaning! Not just our houses, but our bodies too. I’ve had “cleansing” on my mind for a while now, and I’ve been thinking about ways we can support ourselves, aside from the food we eat. One big way is through the water we drink.

“Berkey” is a brand name for a family of water purifiers. Berkeys come in lots of different sizes, but they all do the same thing: purify water like nobody’s business.

I love my Berkey. Seriously.

Why would I purify my water?

The city I live in has top-rated water, ranked 15th out of 147 municipalities statewide. Testing reveals that its levels for chlorine, fluoride, copper, lead and other trace minerals and metals are far below what’s considered “safe.”

I filter my water anyway.

Here’s why:

We live in a highly toxic world. When our bodies get overwhelmed with toxins, they can’t flush them all out; they simply can’t keep up. And we can’t always control the toxins we’re exposed to. We’re threatened by toxins through plastics, air, pesticides, synthetic sweeteners, cleaning supplies, and electromagnetic fields, just to name a few. Over time, these toxins build up in our body tissue and cause disturbances like belly bloat, food cravings, hormone imbalances, and weight creep.

That’s why even though my city’s water supply is considered pretty good, I want to purify it anyway. Purifying my water is something I CAN control. (Plus, it helps flush out other toxins. Booya!) I consume a lot of water. Yes, I drink it plain, but I also use it in coffee, tea, broth, soups, and other forms of cooking. So I feel like it’s important.

Toxins build up over time. Even in our water.

Here’s a picture of the inside of my Berkey’s holding tank, where the water sits waiting to make its way through the highly filters. You can visibly see where substances in the water have built up over time on the holding tank walls. Imagine all that gunk building up inside of YOU!

Other reasons why I love my Berkey? First, it’s is easy to use. You pour water into the top and wait a few minutes. That’s it; the rest takes care of itself. There’s nothing to install; you don’t have to attach anything to your faucet. Second, you can use it anywhere. My Berkey normallly sits on my kitchen counter but these days, it’s sitting in my car. (I’m in the middle of a 7000+ mile road trip, and it’s the one travel companion I’ve brought with me.)

But the best part of my Berkey? The taste. Berkey water taste like, well, nothing. It’s as pure as pure can be. There was a time when I thought my city water tasted pretty good. Now if I draw water from the tap, I can smell chlorine AND taste it. What I once thought tasted pretty good was actually due to desensitized taste buds.

Curious? Check out the Berkey website for more info (full disclosure: this is an affiliate link, which means if you make a purchase, I’ll earn a small percentage on your purchase price*). Berkeys come in lots of different sizes, so you can find one that fits your family size and usage perfectly.

Invest in Yourself. Invest in the Environment.

Think of a Berkey as an investment. First, it’s an investment in your overall health. Second, it’s an investment in the environment: if you normally buy bottled water, a Berkey will save you money in the long run AND eliminate all those plastic bottles!

P.S. I’m running an April spring detox. If you want reduce cravings, have more energy, and rev up your metabolism, this detox might be perfect for you!
